Ephesians 5 |
1 Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

T As a beloved child of God, seek to become an imitator of God who is kind, compassionate and forgiving. [See Matthew 5:48, Luke 6:36, 1 Corinthians 11:1]
F Small children sometimes mimic their parents but for beloved children of God imitation is a necessity.
C Know that God loves His children who are dear to Him. [See 1 John 3:1]

2 And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

T Remember that Jesus gave His life for us as an offering and a sacrifice which was pleasing to God.

T Offer fragrance to God by sacrificially living for others.
F Know that God had an eternal purpose for the life and death of Jesus.
C Know that God uses death with purpose for those impacted by it.

3 But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

T Do not compromise and give anyone any cause whatsoever to accuse you of sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry or greed. [See Colossians 3:5]
T Do not commit fornication (illicit sexual intercourse such as adultery, homosexuality, lesbianism, bestiality or incest). [See 1 Corinthians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 4:3]
T Do not become defiled (unclean) through moral impurity or sinfulness.
T Do not commit idolatry; the desertion of the worship of the true God for the worship of idols.
T Do not become obsessed with the possession of worldly things or the accumulation of wealth. [See Hebrews 13:5]
F Know that neither sexual immorality, impurity, idolatry nor greed is to have any place whatsoever in the body of Christ.

4 Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

6 Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

12 For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret.

F Know that it is shameful even to talk about the things done privately and in secret by the children of disobedience.

13 But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

F Know that light confronts works of darkness exposing them for what they really are and convicting those who participate in them of their sin.

14 Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

F Know that God is saying to those who are spiritually dead to awake from their sleep and rise up from the dead so that Christ may shine the light of truth upon them and give them life. [See Romans 13:11-14]
P Know that only the light of Jesus will stop you stumbling in the darkness and show you the right way to go. [v8-14]

15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise,

17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is.

18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;

W Do not become drunk with alcohol which is the type of depraved behaviour exhibited by those who carelessly indulge to riotous excess and who cannot be saved.

19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

T Don’t seek satisfaction through temptations like alcohol but instead be fulfilled by the Holy Spirit, speaking and singing to yourself and making melody in your heart to the Lord. [v18-19]

20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ;

F Husbands, know that marriage is a sacrificial relationship.

F The degree of the husband’s love for his wife is to match the degree of Christ’s sacrificial love for the Church.

26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,

F Know that Christ cleansed and removed sin from the Church so that it would be presentable for eternity with God.

27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish.

F Know that the sacrifice of Jesus was so that He might sanctify His Church, having cleansed it with the purifying preaching of God’s Word, so that He might present it to Himself as a glorious Church that is holy and blameless in His sight. [v25-27]

F Know that the cleansed Church is blameless in the sight of God.
F Know that one day the Lord Jesus Christ will present the Church to Himself at the marriage supper of the Lamb in all splendor. [See Revelation 21:7-9]

28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones.

I Know that we are not just one with Jesus in the Spirit but we are also one with Him in the flesh.
P Know that because you are a member of the body of Christ, you are nourished and cherished by Jesus. [v29-30]

31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.

F Know that love is the highest responsibility of every husband to his wife. No husband is exempt from this.
T Wives, revere and honour your husband.
F Know that respect and honour are the highest responsibility of every wife to her husband. No wife is exempt from this.
