Under Attack

This has been an interesting week. It started in an unexpected way and it soon became apparent that our church was under attack.

Having a mature church leadership team is a great blessing as they know how to respond when attacks come, in this case helping to defuse a tricky situation that might otherwise have proven much more serious and far more damaging.

Sad News

Two people I knew in the past died this week. My mum delivered the news in separate phone calls.

One, someone of my own age, after a long battle with Cancer. I said I would have prayed for him if I'd known. We went to Junior Boys Brigade and church together.

The other, the father of an old school friend, who died from a heart attack unexpectedly. I remember he took me to watch my first football match (Hull City versus Oldham Athletic at Boothferry Park). Other memories, decades old, flooded back. He also went to the same church.

I believe the Lord uses death with a purpose so both of these events got me thinking. What does the Lord want me to do or to learn from this? Hmmm.

Attacks Will Come

As soldiers of Christ, it is not a matter of if an attack will come but rather when they will come.

Forms Of Attack

Attacks of the enemy can come in many forms and rarely unfold as a single event. Often multiple things happen in rapid succession as the enemy seeks to overwhelm and undermine the faith of believers.

Attacks may manifest in any of the following ways:

  • Sickness or a bad diagnosis
  • Unexpected changes of circumstance
  • Disruption
  • Death of someone
  • Persecution
  • Accidents or injury
  • False accusations
  • Division in friendships or family
  • Feelings of resentment or discontent

These may manifest as personal attacks, on friends and family, at church or work, between neighbours etc.

A Brutal Attack

The Corona Virus is a brutal example of a severe spiritual attack by the enemy which has been wreaking havoc in the earth for some months now.

Hundreds of thousands have lost their lives since the devil embarked on a killing spree devouring whom he may.

Fear has taken root and division has taken centre stage, stopping social inetractions of family, friends, workers etc. and closing many establishments.

The world, so confident in its own wisdom, has been turned upside down. Many have lost their jobs and income overnight. Everything in which they placed their security has been swept away and financial meltdown looms. Not just for individuals but the whole global economy as the effects of the pandemic begin to bite.

In God We Trust

Regradless of the circumstances in which we find ourselves, we always have an advocate in whom we can trust. He speaks words of encouragement like no other and is faithful to keep His promises.

17 No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD.

Isaiah 54:17

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28
